Wings Over Wairarapa 2011: Post 4 - RNZAF C130 Hercules

The Royal New Zealand Air Force are always a treat to watch, especially the larger aircraft, such as this Lockheed Martin C130H Hercules. Unfortunately due to weather, the Kiwi Blue parachute team were unable to perform, but the Herc still did a nice demonstration, showing it's speed, ground handling, steep approach and the "wheelbarrow".

People were also able to walk through the aircraft between demonstrations and have a nosey around.

You'll see from the photos that this is one of the "old style" cockpits. One of the Hercs has already been updated to a modern cockpit. The other aircraft are and will be undergoing this change over the next year or so. It will be good to get a photo or 2 of the new cockpit at another airshow - it should make for an interesting comparison.

I saw a pic somewhere of the Herc glass cockpit, so I guess they'll let you see. After the latest Orion upgrade, however, the public will no longer be allowed on board. (As told to me by a 5SQN member on board one in March 2009.

Hi Allister,

Yeah, I had seen a picture on another blog also. Pity about the Orion... I've never been in one of those!

Cheers,
